The Importance of Power Line Maintenance

WHAT CAN HAPPEN:  Power lines are critical infrastructure that requires maintenance to prevent power outages, fallen power lines, emergency repairs, fires, damage to equipment, negative reputational image and safety issues for personnel.

SOME CAUSES: There are Acts of God like lightning, careless fires caused by humans, and tree branch growth that can put tensile stress on the wires.

A MAJOR CAUSE: The failure of high voltage power line insulators is one of the most prevalent causes. Power line insulators have a limited life span and fail over time internally or due to pollution contamination.

POWER UTILITIES: Used to consider the failure of these insulators as “normal” or “an Act of God”. Today the technology and methodology exists and is proven to prevent such losses, outages and dangers.

CONSEQUENCES: A lack of knowledge or the failure to take the necessary precautions can lead to significant financial losses, expensive litigation, loss of insurability, damage to corporate image and danger to people.

Procedures and the technology for conducting maintenance on power transmission and distribution lines. A proven product is available: Positron’s live-line porcelain and composite Insulator Testers which determine the health of high-voltage transmission line insulators and records the condition of the insulators in a power utility’s network without disrupting the network, using the electric field method. This early warning of detecting defective insulators enables remedial maintenance action to be taken on a timely and unrushed pre-scheduled fashion before failures occur. This will be eliminate costly outages and dangerous conditions that can also ignite fires.

High-voltage transmission and distribution power lines are suspended from tower structures with insulators. The integrity of the high-voltage power line is dependent on the dielectric and mechanical integrity of the insulators. It is important that the integrity of these insulators be tested with a reliable and proven technology that detects leakages before failures occur. The electric field method developed by Positron, is the only method that is 100% reliable in detecting conductive defects. Most early defects are not detectible by methodologies that rely on corona discharge such as ultraviolet or infrared or acoustic technologies. These defects can lead to catastrophic failures. It is important to use a technology that is 100% reliable and guaranteed to identify defects and dangerous conditions,

The Positron testers are safe and easy use. The results are instantaneously available and are also stored and downloaded to which enables a utility to schedule selective maintenance long in advance of a failure. They are also used a safety tool to determine if it is safe to work in the vicinity of any insulator.

Positron Insulator Testers scan energized insulators for defects in less than one minute

Protects the safety of personnel, eliminates costly power outages and damages,
and alerts utilities when preventative maintenance is needed.
