Substation Insulator Tester
With the Substation Insulator Tester, the insulators on high-voltage electrical apparatus in substations can now be reliably tested energized without shutting power down.
A bushing failure in a substation can have catastrophic impacts. For example a failure in a transformer bushing can result in an explosion, destruction of the transformer costing millions of dollars, substantial downtime (Power outage) until a replacement can be obtained and danger to other equipment and personnel.
The Substation Insulator Tester was specifically designed to test the integrity of insulators and bushings of all shapes and sizes found in Substations. It uses Positron’s proven and electric field technology to detecting any conductive defects without disconnecting power from the insulators/ bushings, or the devices they are attached to. It allows a user to test an insulator or bushing in less than a minute to determine if it has any conductive defects, dangerous conditions and whether it is safe to work in the vicinity or if it requires maintenance.
- Used on all types of substation insulators (Porcelain, Composite)
- Ideal for substation environments all shapes and sizes including conical shaped insulators, bushings, station posts, lightning arresters
- Designed for operator safety (no electrical contact with any metallic parts of the insulator, fittings or high voltage line)
- Lightweight, durable construction
Features
- Microprocessor based technology
- Compatible with standard hot sticks and field equipment
- Tests Porcelain, Composite, Station Post and other insulator applications (see data sheet)
- Readings are automatically taken at each porcelain bell or composite insulator skirt or shed
readings are triggered by pulling the tester assembly along the insulator/bushing apparatus being tested - Lightweight and durable
- Ruggedized carrying cases
- Tablet/Laptop
Note: The substation tester uses the same reliable electric field defect detection technology as the Porcelain and Composite Positron Insulator Testers. The display shows the defects in a different fashion than Positron’s other testers. It requires training to interpret the results. However the prevention of failures in a substation far outweighs the need for training and the need to disconnect the equipment from operation in the grid and testing the bushings with no power connection.
